Counterweight is dedicated to the recently thinned grey wolf packs of Yellowstone National Park. Despite being protected as integral members of the National Park’s ecosystem, the number of wolves in the area has declined once again in 2022 due to aggressive hunting, and the delicate natural balance could be threatened as it once was before.
During the 1920s, federal policy allowed hunting of the Yellowstone grey wolves, which resulted in their disappearance from the area and drastic crippling of the ecosystem. Counterweight is a visual reminder of this tenuous but important tie between an ecosystem and its predators.
Suspended as the carcasses of wolves hunted by farmers once were hung from fences, the grey wolf mandible here is held aloft by a cord symbolizing the many species whose long-term survival depends on the presence of their predators. But its display is not to warn others to reach for their weapons, as well, but to move carefully, lest this strange, wild relationship be disturbed beyond repair, and the whole thing fall to ruin.
10% of the proceeds from the sale of Counterweight will be donated to the Yellowstone Wolf Project.
